Olympic and Swatch World Tour Finals double for the Brazilians
Can somebody throw us a thesaurus?! We’ve now officially run out of words to describe brilliant Brazilians Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt.
For the second year running they beat off all the competition to lift the Swatch Beach Volleyball FIVB World Tour Finals title following a stunning display of breathtaking beach volleyball.
But the Olympic gold medalists, who reigned supreme on home sand at the Copacabana last month, were pushed all the way in a match fitting for the final by fellow Brazilians Pedro Solberg and Evandro Goncalves.
Big-serving Evandro and Solberg came into the game as underdogs but led in a high-quality first set, only for their countrymen to storm back and take a 1-0 lead 21-19.
It was nip and tuck in a tense but exhilarating second set. Pedro/Evandro led by two points at one stage following some impressive blocking from the towering Evandro at the net. But as the set wore on, Alison and Bruno got stronger with Bruno showcasing his incredible all-round play and Alison dominating at the net in the heat of the action.
The Olympic champs led 20-17 and had three match points – but their opponents refused to lie down as a Pedro Solberg attack and beefy Evandro block got them back in it at 20-19.
However, Bruno had the final say with the very last point of a sublime season with a clever cut shot that trickled over the net to leave the Poreč Major winners celebrating yet another gold to add to their growing collection.
Congratulations guys!
