We’ve almost run out of words for them…so here’s Laura and Kira’s words…

After a momentous and historic ‘golden’ season, Swatch Beach Volleyball FIVB World Tour champion Laura Ludwig revealed a poor performance in a European Championship match was the turning point before she and Kira Walkenhorst stormed to win gold after gold this summer.

The German duo have been in truly scintillating form sweeping all before them on their way to recording Olympic, European, national and Swatch World Tour Finals glory – not to mention two Swatch Major Series titles.

“There was a point during the European Championships when we lost in the pool play to Greece and that was a defining moment of the season,” Laura explained to us. “We didn’t pay attention to what we should have been doing on the court.

“We had a big talk after it and I think it was a key point. Our team have helped us with a vision of where to go and it’s been great ever since – and that’s why we didn’t play so many bad points afterwards!”

But among the glut of golds in the girls’ collection from this season, which is their favorite – apart from the Olympic crown at the Copacabana?

“My favorite is definitely Hamburg,” said Laura. “Winning the Swatch Major Series at home was big. It was a great tournament for us, it was the first time we beat April and Kerri and that was pretty special.

“We treated the final like the Olympics because of the pressure of being the home team and a big crowd. So to win in front of family, friends and fans was great and I’m really proud of this.”

Kira agreed…eventually, after a long, hard think! “That’s a hard question!” she said. “It’s been a long, tough season with a lot of matches but we were happy to win gold in Hamburg with our friends and family watching. We’re pleased to win this but Hamburg edges it.”

Now that they have completed the triple crown this year – the Olympics, Swatch World Tour Finals and European Championships – Kira wants to add one more medal to their collection.

“We haven’t talked much about next season but our last World Championships performance was bad so that would be a big thing for us,” she told us. “We’ll try our best and another medal would be great.

“Only the World Championships are missing now but we’re happy at the moment with this season with what we’ve won – it really is a lot!”

Good luck girls – enjoy your well-earned rest!
