Bad day at the office for Laura and Kira at #TorontoFinals
It was a good day for Swiss pair Heidrich/Zumkehr but not for reigning Olympic champions Ludwig/Walkenhorst at the Swatch World Tour Finals at Polson Pier.
In a rematch of the A1 Major Klagenfurt final, the Swiss girls got revenge by battling back from one set down to record a stunning victory and condemn Laura and Kira to a shock second successive defeat.
“It’s not been our day!” Laura told us afterwards. “We’re not used to losing twice on the same day and it doesn’t happen that often.
“Luckily our self-confidence is pretty high so tomorrow it’s all about getting lots of sleep and playing better. We’ve seen how well we can play in both matches when we’ve won the first set but we’ll come back and make sure we’ll improve on Friday.”
While there was disappointment for the Germans the Swiss were grinning from ear to ear.
“It’s been a good day!” smiled Joana Heidrich. “We didn’t start that well, they were serving really well but we found our form and upped our game in the second and third sets and we’re really happy to beat such a good team – especially the Olympic champions!”
The stunning win for the Swiss girls meant they progress automatically to tomorrow’s quarterfinals!
Meanwhile, in the game that was being played at the same time over on Court 2, Brazilians Larissa/Talita kept up their 100 per cent record at the #TorontoFinals with a straight sets win over Liliana/Elsa of Spain.
The Brazilians, who are desperate to retain their Swatch World Tour Finals title from last year, are also through to the last eight of the competition!
Stay tuned for the news on who joins who in the elimination rounds of the women’s tournament later this evening!
